Getting high on trampolines
May 20th, 2010

MGMT “Congratulations” music review
May 20th, 2010MGMT’s follow-up to its first album Oracular Spectacular is not quite as flashy. While its freshman album has quite an inventive feel, Congratulations reflects more of the past, with a Beatles-esque style.
The CD begins with “It’s Working,” a colorful and catchy song. It is vibrant and upbeat with an old-fashioned electronic sound. The drums are powerful and maintain the rhythm very well, which switches throughout the song. Read the rest of this entry “
Plastic Beach by Gorillaz music review
May 2nd, 2010Not to encourage judging a CD by its cover, but the cover art of Plastic Beach by Gorillaz is effective in drawing in the listener. The dreamlike image of an island getaway that isn’t what it seems thoroughly matches the title of the album. The music complements it even further.
Gorillaz is well-known for its unusual but catchy beats as well as its scratchy recording segments, but is really successful in its ingenuity. Started as a virtual band of four made-up characters, it has reached great heights with real collaborators such as Mos Def and Snoop Dogg. Read the rest of this entry “

Alternatives to traditional education
March 22nd, 2010
Other opportunities for students seeking alternatives to traditional four year colleges are available through trade schools.
For those who seek a different experience
than what is provided at a regular
four-year college, want to study a
specific discipline, or just want to graduate
faster, trade schools offer these benefits and
more. The trade or vocational school is an
alternate route students can take in order to
get their degree and enter the working world.
Students coming out of these schools
“have marketable skill,” GBHS guidance
counselor Walt Wild said. “They get out into
the workforce fairly quickly.” Read the rest of this entry “

Status update: I hate you :)
February 5th, 2010Each day, or rather, each time I log onto Facebook, I see its main motto: “Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life.”
Having a broader purpose than MySpace, “a place for friends,” Facebook’s motto implies that a person can friend anyone and everyone they are, or have ever been, acquainted with. It allows the user to have many people in his or her network, though most may not be actual friends in real life.
Facebook most definitely encompasses the networking aspect of the phrase “social networking,” but what about the social part? Read the rest of this entry “
Animals in the recession
February 4th, 2010Help has arrived to the pets and pet owners of Placer County. The SOS program, newly instated by the Placer Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is a program with a goal of keeping pet owners and their animals together during tough economic times by providing financial assistance.
“Rather than have someone surrender the animals to an SPCA, we are trying to keep people with their animals by assisting them financially,” Placer SPCA director of operations Matt Green said. “Our CEO, Leilani Vierra, said it just doesn’t make sense to have these animals with us when with a little bit of help people can keep up (with the care of their animal).” Read the rest of this entry “
Hulu
November 18th, 2009The inspiration for the name “Hulu” is intriguing. It’s most direct definition comes from the Mandarin word “hulu,” which means “gourd,” or, “holder of precious things.” These “precious things” are videos.
As a website based on collaboration, Hulu receives content from around 190 companies, spanning from National Geographic to ABC Family.
“I love Hulu’s variety,” Granite Bay High School alumnus Kapil Yedidi said, “and the fact that it has almost everything I might want to watch.” Read the rest of this entry “
