    Student Spotlight: Jennifer Ohlson

    November 16th, 2010

Q:  When did you join NCL?

I joined in sixth grade because I wanted to do charity work and be able to help out local charities with whatever they needed. I also joined because it encourages strong bonds between mothers and daughters.

Q: What duties do you perform for the program?

I was president of my class last year and held monthly meetings to address important league issues and obligations to our community. I also help out by donating my (time) to Special Olympics, the St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen, and the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

Q: Does NCL take up a lot of time?

No, the meetings are only once a month which is nice and you are able to sign up for the philanthropies whenever you are available. When it comes to events, they are only a few hours long and are really fun and enjoyable.

Q: What do your senior requirements for NCL include?

Well, we have a certain amount of hours that need to be completed. Seniors have fewer hours required than the other classes do. We also get senior presents which are when all the seniors give speeches and look back on our experiences in the program.

Q: What other extracurricular activities are you involved in?

I have been playing volleyball at Granite Bay High School since freshman year and have been on the varsity volleyball team since sophomore year.

Freshmen athletes make mark on varsity

    September 13th, 2010

This year freshmen have exceeded expected athletic ability and made their way to varsity teams.

Becoming a varsity athlete is a hard thing to accomplish. The older players usually have several more years of experience and learning. However, a few athletes have surpassed the expected.

Maddy Deters and Taylor Nelson made the Granite Bay High School varsity girls’ volleyball team. Both girls were excited for the challenges that come with playing at a higher level and also to be playing with the older girls.

“It’s a challenge, but I like that I still get respect from the other girls.” Deters said.

Being on a team with older, more experienced girls is different then playing your own level. But both girls felt like they were being treated just like the veteran players.

“We are one big team, and have to work together. We all treat each other the same,” Nelson said.

As well as being younger and having less experience and playing time, these young players also have to adjust to a higher level of difficulty.

However these girls have earned their way to varsity. They worked hard and fought for their spots.

Each player spent five hours every Tuesday and Thursday at the school during the summer for training.

When asked what it’s like to have freshmen on varsity, GBHS senior Jen Ohlsen said, “It’s a lot different because I have never played with freshmen and there (have) never been freshmen on varsity before.”

The freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams have united as a program. They are all in this for each other regardless of who is on what team.

In addition to these two standout athletes, GBHS freshman Clare Carroll has also made a varsity sport: cross country.

Carroll also competes in the track and field 3000 meter and 1500 meter races.

This past summer, Carroll flew to Chicago and became the national champion in the 3000 meter race and was the second place finisher in the 1500 meter.

“It is fun to run with the older athletes,” Carroll said. “I like that it is more challenging– but you have to put in a lot more effort.”

Being on he varsity team has raised the difficulty level for Carroll as well. “The varsity team runs farther than the freshmen and sophomore runners,” she said.

However, distance doesn’t stop Carroll, she run six to seven days a week. Her total running mileage for the week comes to around 40 miles, farther than some students at GBHS drive in a week.

When asked what it is like having Carroll on the cross country team, cross country coach Angie Pozzi said, “It’s great, she is real upbeat and loves to run.”

All three of these girls have one thing in common, they are hard workers and love a challenge.

This year many students besides these three girls have made their ways up the team ladders.

Cheer, football, volleyball and cross country have all welcomed new freshmen and sophomores onto their teams and programs.

Young athletes are on the rise and are working harder than ever.

Granite Bay Varsity Volleyball defeated by Rio

    September 2nd, 2010

The game was in the Granite Bay gym Wednesday, September 1st at 6:30.

The Granite Bay Volleyball team was not so lucky in their second pre-season game. 3-0  was the final score. Each match was neck-in-neck, both teams only behind or up by a few points.

The first match was a close 24-26, the second 20-25, and the final was 24-26.

The ball was everywhere, saves were common and great plays were made. Each team wanted the same thing and was willing to fight hard for it.

In the end, it was a tough game, and a great one at that.
