reCREATE: A look inside Roseville’s own ‘eco art’ center
May 20th, 2010 An old proverb says that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” With a bit of creativity and imagination, reCREATE is a goldmine of just that: trash waiting to be turned into treasure.
The program was founded by Donna Sangwin, a local businesswoman who felt there was a better use for waste materials produced by people and corporations.
The basic principle of the program is to use the leftover materials from companies and resell the products as arts and crafts supplies for children.

Artist of the month: Connor Morgan
May 20th, 2010
Painting is one of Morgan’s passions, he has continued it throughout high school.
Some people take fourth period off during their senior year because they want a break.
For Granite Bay High School senior Connor Morgan, it’s often just a chance to get work done on his paintings.
Although he started out just drawing and doodling, in high school he began to try different types of art, including painting.

Being a new student at GBHS can be uncomfortable
May 20th, 2010It’s never easy being the new guy. New school, new teachers, new classes and no friends.
The story, however, is entirely different for each person.

Facebook fan pages are out of control
May 20th, 2010 Click here to become a fan of ‘I Hate Meaningless, Irrelevant and Pointless Fan Pages!’” No, Facebook, I will not become a fan of this.
The irony alone is enough to eradicate the faint glimmer of hope that my generation might be doing something useful with their lives, but even more pathetic are the 157 fans who are completely content with publicly expressing their own hypocrisy.

Intelligence, that’s not just artifical
April 19th, 2010 The annual FIRST Robotics Competition isn’t exactly like the robot battle competition shows you see on TV. Rather than crushing each other with hammers and saw blades, the teams have to work together to defeat an opposing group of teams at a game that’s more like a sport than a battle.
It is, however, still a very tense and exciting experience for the competitors. This year, for Granite Bay High School’s robotics team, it was also a very frustrating one. Read the rest of this entry “
The Constant – Story of the Year
March 23rd, 2010 Story of the Year once again thunders out of the recording studio with another dose of its heavy hardcore-influenced style of alternative rock.
The Constant, its fourth studio album, manages to align with general trends of popular alternative music while still showing a heavier side that feels a bit like modern styles of metal.
Story of the Year is a five-piece band from Missouri. Formed in 1995, its first signed release was 2002’s Page Avenue, and with each release since it has honed its own unique style of vigorous, often inspirational rock music. Read the rest of this entry “
Social networking by the numbers
March 23rd, 2010 Texting, Facebook and other forms of electronic communication have become an increasingly significant part of teenagers’ lives.
According to msnbc.com, studies have shown that television use and video games tend to correlate with poor relationships with parents and sometimes peers.
But if technology is becoming an outlet for communication rather than escape from it, what effect can this have on the relationships teenagers have with each other?
In a survey of approximately 180 Granite Bay High School students, about half report sending at least fifty text messages per day, spending one hour or more on social networking sites, or both. Read the rest of this entry “
Restaurant Review: Boudin SF
March 22nd, 2010 At first glance, it’s the typical bakery/café scenario. Scan the menu, order a sandwich, a salad or some soup, then sit down and wait for your food.
Boudin SF is set up like a café, but upon closer inspection, it feels more like a sit-down restaurant. There are booths as well as tables and there is warm, incandescent lighting filling the room.
After scanning the menu for a moment, my friend and I ordered our meals and chose a table.
The atmosphere is pleasant and well-lit without being too bright, and the tables comfortably spaced out. The color scheme of the restaurant is simple – red and brown.
But the most interesting aspect is the bread animals. That’s right, sourdough bread baked into the shape of animals.

GBHS media gives news a new look online
March 15th, 2010
Since the school’s technology is somewhat outdated, GBHS media has started to put the morning bulletins on YouTube. This will not only save the school money, but also increase video quality.
Let’s be realistic; Granite Bay High School’s old broadcasting system and television sets are outdated.
For years, media has been broadcasting their bulletins from the library through connections to all the televisions in the school over a network of cables. It’s done the job, but with new portable buildings spliced into the system of cables, the quality and clarity of the sound and video has become increasingly worse.
So now it’s time to welcome in the digital age: media is switching to YouTube.
“Take Five” program used to improve GBHS campus
February 6th, 2010
To keep the campus clean, students like senior Robert Thyberg, above, take part in Take Five by picking up trash.
Have you looked around the quad at lunch lately? More importantly, were you looking around back in November?
Every month, the Granite Bay High School faculty meets to discuss school-related matters. Sometimes they’ll choose a specific issue to be the primary focus of their time and energy in order to address it quickly and effectively.
Last September the administration chose to focus on the dilemma of students leaving trash around the campus. This issue, however, is not a new one.
GBHS assistant principal Brent Mattix said, “Trash has always been a problem at Granite Bay High School.” The only new factor, he said, was the recent rodent infestation, which seems to have opened people’s eyes to just how much trash has been left behind. Read the rest of this entry “
