    Rocklin Thunder defeat Grizzly girls

    January 26th, 2011

On Wednesday night, January 26, the Granite Bay Grizzlies were defeated by the Rocklin Thunder with a final score of 71-38.

Rocklin scoring 3 points within minutes of the start of the game was quickly countered by Sam Huhtala, who scored the first points for Granite Bay.

Cayley McDowell scored a few very impressive three-pointers within the first half of the game. By the second quarter, things started slowing down, until Katrina Reeves scored bringing the score up to 17-15 with the Grizzlies not far from being able to take the lead.

However, Rocklin’s persistence beginning in the first quarter kept the Grizzlies trailing behind throughout the rest of the game. By halftime, the score was 17-41.

The Grizzlies started to catch up during the second half, but their efforts were not quite able to defeat Rocklin’s persistence, and the final basket scored by Rocklin brought the ending score to 71-38.

    Schedule Change

    November 17th, 2010

Beginning with the 2009 school semester, the school year at Granite Bay High School began earlier in August in order to push finals before winter break and graduation to May.
This year, because of the schedule shift, the fall semester is shorter than the spring semester, primarily affecting fall single-semester AP classes.
The fall semester has roughly 82 school days, with the program Every 15 Minutes included in those days, which takes a day away from the juniors and seniors. The spring semester has more than 90 days with AP tests, STAR testing, and IB tests taking up time.
The AP government/economics class taken by seniors tis one term long, as opposed to the year-long blocked AP classes.
Because it is only one semester long in the fall, the pace of the class is faster, which means students are given substantially less time to understand the material.
This typically has not been a problem for the AP government/economics class.
However, this year, because the schedule has a smaller number of days in the fall semester than students are used to, students in the AP government/economics class have less time to learn the class material and to prepare for the AP test in the spring.
“I haven’t had anything remotely this short before,” AP government teacher Jarrod Westberg said. “It makes it really difficult for (students) in terms of having to slide through stuff, making things a little bit tougher this year.”
Senior Austin Akre is one of the class’s many students having to adjust to a shorter term to prepare for the AP test in May.
“(It’s unfortunate) because I’m not used to AP classes. (AP government) was my first AP class at GBHS, and on top of that the semester is shorter so we got less time in the class than normal,” Akre said. “This meant that I had to spend more time outside of school trying to understand the material.”
The faster pace led many students to believe that
they are constantly behind, as AP government takes up half of a semester, and after midterms, the rest of the time is spent on economics.
“I definitely feel behind and my students feel behind too because we’re going faster than normal,” Westberg said.
Not all single term AP classes are affected the same way, though.
AP psychology, which is also taught in the fall, does not have a conflict with the shorter first term.
AP psychology teacher Natalie Elkin sees no problems in the length difference between the two terms.
Because the AP psychology test is the first AP test offered (a week and a day before the AP government test), the terms are balanced. This is also helped by the fact that AP psychology is offered in the spring term as well.
Similarly, GBHS AP Language teacher Judi Daniels said the terms are more balanced because of the placement of the AP language test, and the IB tests in the spring.
“I lose a week in the spring due to testing, so from my point of view, (the schedule is) a good thing,” Daniels said. “The number of weeks in the fall I have to prepare students is just right.”
So far, students who have an affected single-semester AP class in the fall have seemed to do all right despite the time loss.
“I (have) managed the class all right, but some nights came with extremely long hours of studying,” Akre said.

GBHS boys’ soccer beats Del Oro

    October 20th, 2010

On October 20, the Granite Bay High School’s varsity boys’ soccer team beat the Del Oro High School eagles 3-0.

The start of the game began quite aggressively as a yellow card was pulled on Del Oro as the two teams were rallying the ball back and forth.

For the remainder of the first half the teams continued taking very close shots.

The score remained tied at 0-0 for most of the first half until minutes before halftime, Senior Connor Hallisey kicked in the first goal.

After that shot, Del Oro started to bring up their defense, but by then, it was halftime.

The second half was much faster paced than the first half as the Grizzlies pushed through Del Oro’s defense shortly after the start of the half.

Within the first five minutes of the second half, the Grizzlies showed great teamwork when Senior Kendall Modiste scored the second goal of the game making the score 2-0.

The frustration Del Oro was feeling at this second goal was very clear as yet another yellow card was pulled on the agressive and agitated  Eagles halfway through the second half.

Despite their stronger defense, for most of the second half the ball hardly ever left the Eagle’s side of the field as shot after shot were made by the Grizzlies, all extremely close, bringing the crowd to their feet many times.

All of those close shots only brought the Grizzlies to push harder, which seemed to work worked as Senior Nico Mamone scored the third and final goal of the game, resulting in a final score of 3-0.

The Grizzlies host Rocklin this Friday , the 22nd which is looking to be a huge game.

    An earlier ending

    May 20th, 2010

During the spring semester at Granite Bay High School in 2009, a decision was made about the new start and end times of the following school year.
For some students, the change in schedule was not welcome. The main reason for this was due to a shortening in summer, as well as the unfamiliarity a new schedule would bring to the student body. Read the rest of this entry “

GBHS seniors Garrick Monaghan, Tyler Towery, David Bittner and Craig Smith dance to “Larger Than Life” by the Backstreet Boys.

On Feb. 27, Granite Bay High School seniors Garrick Monaghan, Tyler Towery, Craig Smith and David Bittner were awarded $300 for winning the GBHS Lip Sync.
To add to their stunning performance, the winning show involved several intricate props. These included PVC, microphones, stage lights, a confetti cannon and curtain fabric.
All of those props didn’t come cheap though.
The grand total cost of acquiring the props for the show added up to around $327.92. The first place winners of the competition received a prize of $300.
However, even with the $300 prize, the win still put the four performers down roughly $30. Read the rest of this entry “
