Blast From the Past: Kick Scooters

The kick scooter is a popular and inexpensive invetion that people of all ages enjoy to use.
Scooters have been around for at least one hundred years. The early homemade scooters were made by connecting skating wheels to a board and using pipes as the handlebars.
In the 1990s, Swedish inventor Wim Ouboter created a sleeker scooter able to fold up and fit in a backpack. His invention was then copied and made popular by Razor.
It used to be that everywhere you looked you would see kids riding kick scooters. Any channel you flipped to, there would be a commercial advertising kick scooters.
The popular appeal of the kick scooter comes from the scooter’s ability to do tricks. Plus, kick scooters are able to fold up, allowing kids to fit them in their backpacks or lockers. They are also a fun way to get around, providing exercise without polluting the air.
The age group for users ranges from toddlers to parents riding their kid’s Razor scooter.
The scooters come in various colors, including blue, purple, red, green and black. Different colors are convenient for families with more than one kid, so each kid is able to tell which one is his or hers. They can also be a problem because kids care about what color the scooter is–A boy does not want to ride a purple scooter because it may seem too girly.
Scooters are fairly inexpensive, and can be used to the point where the scooter has to be held together by duct tape. So it’s safe to say a kick scooter is worth the money.
Some Granite Bay High School students still enjoy riding around on scooters. One particular group on campus that can be seen riding around on scooters is the GBHS boys’ tennis team.
The team calls themselves the Night Riders and is seen riding around Feist park every day of the week.
Whether kids are riding around in a scooter gang or just having fun, scooters are coming back in style and becoming popular once again.
