Music Review- HIM Screamworks: Love in Theory & Practice

Screamworks is in stores now.
With the unique voice of the lead singer of HIM, a creepy CD cover and a new sound that still defines this one of a kind band, HIM has done it again, coming out with its new album, Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice.
To be honest, this is definitely not my type of music. However, after listening to these thirteen new tracks, I have to say that it’s not that bad. Every song and lyric is filled with emotion.
In the song “Disarm Me,” there’s a line that says “to witness the prettiest flower in the wicked to dust” and in the song “Shatter Me with Hope” part of the chorus says “crawl, come breathe me in, bleed out sorrow/Scream me a dream, untouched by shadows.”
These lines are filled with colorful words and metaphors. I would say this is like poetry with its dial switched up to the max.
The lead singer/lyricist, Ville Valo, could be the next Edgar Allen Poe if he really tried.
The only songs I do not like are “Acoustic Funeral (for Love in Limbo)” and “The Foreboding Sense of Impending Happiness.”
These two songs aren’t horrible, but they don’t match up with the others–they are very dull and dragging.
The main song this band is promoting is called “Heartkiller.” The lyrics in this song are creative, but hard to understand. In my opinion, it’s one of the best songs in the album. It makes you want to get up, grab your pretend microphone that’s actually a hairbrush and sing your heart out.
My personal favorite song in this entire album is definitely “In the Arms of Rain.”
It has a very catchy tune in the beginning and progressively gets better throughout the song.
This new album is said to be leaning more towards the pop-rock genre then its original, passionate metal sound. But maybe this is why I like this album, and not the band’s albums that have come out in the past.
But with this record, HIM succeeded in getting another fan. I’ll be looking forward to their future albums from now on.
