Invention In-ten -tions

The past decade has been marked by many new and fun gizmos and gadgets. However, as technology advances, there are sure to be better inventions in this new decade.
In the last ten years, Apple has released a lot of unique items, and they are not done doing so.
So far they have come out with the iPod classic, iPod touch, iPod nano and iPod shuffle, as well as the new generations of these old favorites.
This was, of course, in partnership with the many new laptops, desktops and software they developed. Not to mention the highly anticipated Apple Tablet, also known as the iPad, which is basically an oversized iPod touch.
This new computer from Apple will definitely be top notch. Described by Apple founder, Steve Jobs, as “magical,” it is sure to go beyond anything most people have imagined.
Kyle Chin, Granite Bay High School junior, said, “I think (Apple) will have iScooters and iRobots, because Apple is slowly dominating the world of technology.”
This new decade also will bring many new cars.
Already released is the third generation of the Toyota Prius. Not only does this car get over 50 mpg, but it parks itself.
Cool features like this are probably going to become more common in all cars, instead of being in only a few types.
“I think that cars in the next decade will be more eco friendly,” Justin Hushbeck, a GBHS junior, said.
With the economy down and sales on cars still low, companies will continue their search for the next hit model.
Whether it is a cool, luxury-minded or eco friendly automobile, cars are certainly on their way to futuristic Jetson-esque models.
As far as new games go, there is also a lot to look forward to.
There are rumors of a new Wii system. This new Wii would be in high definition and display a picture quality much similar to an Xbox 360 or a Playstation 3.
Considering graphics are usually the chief concern for most people, the new Wii will be better suited for the enjoyment of older people, but will also cover the kid-friendly options.
The new Wii doesn’t have an exact release date, but some sources say it could come out as early as 2011.
As far as an Xbox 720 or a Playstation 4, nothing is official, but it’s safe to assume that there will definitely be some new gaming systems.
Usually these systems follow an eight year cycle, so the time is coming for some new ones to be released.
Games for these systems are also probably going to be amped up as well.  They are already getting bigger and better with graphics getting more lifelike.
So maybe the next step will be to actually put the gamer in the game, kind of like the old Playstation game Eyetoy.
The Eyetoy is a camera that goes on top of your television, and makes it look like you are inside the television.
This would make games even more real and definitely more fun.
Some students expect bigger things than just new games coming out within the next few years.
Kevin Kong, a GBHS junior, said, “I think that in the years to come, there will be anti-gravity/ Velcro suits to allow us to travel through the air safely.”
All we know for sure is that as scientists come out with new amazing technologies, many fun new toys will be available.
Who knows, maybe anti-gravity and Star Wars lightsabers are closer then we think.

Benefits of an early start in learning foreign languages

In the European Union, 50 percent of the population is fluent in more than one language, compared to a mere 25 percent in the United States. All nations in the European Union, in fact, aside from Ireland and Scotland, require students to take foreign language classes. Instead of categorizing language classes as electives, Europeans consider these classes part of a student’s core and place special emphasis on language in the lower grade levels. In around 80 percent of these nations, [...]

    Grizzlies Make History

The football left the hand of senior Granite Bay High School quarterback Brendan Keeney and arched through the clear, cold sky under the watchful stare of thousands of fans at Sacramento State University. The ball seemed to hang in midair, leaving the feeling that the entire season could be hanging on the outcome of this one play, called “Back Pass Right Y Dancer.” GBHS had gone up 10-0 in the early stages of the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I championship, but [...]

Grizzly gets students in an up…ROAR

So what do the students here at GBHS think of the ever-so-humble grizzly that belongs to our school? Most of the students here would agree that this beast of an animal does an accurate job at reflecting [...]

Young Player Takes the Field by Storm

Sophomores are so rare on the varsity football team that neither of the Granite Bay High School alumi currently playing in the NFL were chosen to play varsity football as a sophomore. Yet sophomore Tony Ellison was brought up to be a flyback for varsity football. “Some people are just born with talent. Ellison is one of those people,” defensive backs coach Mike Valentine said. “I was blessed with great skill and speed and I work really hard at what [...]

    Importance of Senior Year Underestimated

Every student knows how high school is supposed to work: freshman, sophomore and junior year slowly build up the workload and, consequently, the stress. But once the last year of high school arrives and rigorous course work has already been completed in the first three years, seniors are as good as done. At least that is what many students think. Senior year is actually the most important time to impress colleges. Granite Bay High School principal Michael McGuire created a [...]

    Struggling with offensive stereotypes

Within the confines of a culinary class, it would not generally be considered unusual for one student to warn another not to walk too close to the many ovens around the room. However, when it happened to senior Sam Holzer, the cautionary remark was perceived as hurtful and offensive. Holzer is of the Jewish faith, and the comment had been made by a would-be comedic fellow student who meant to reference the gas chambers and subsequent cremation tactics used by [...]

    An epic pie-gobbling extravaganza

Pumpkin pies can be a delicious fall favorite, or turn into a pretty nasty dish in a pie eating competition. Needless to say, the Gazette’s first ever “Gazette vs.” challenge was a hilarious success. For the first challenge the Gazette staff took on the yearbook staff in a fall pumpkin pie eating contest. The girls started off our competition, with female Gazette representatives junior Brooklyn Klepl and senior Olivia Cornell pitted against yearbook senior Bridgette Galarza and junior Jenny Woo.
